Celebrating 100yrs of our Village Hall

In 2013 we celebrated the Centenary of The Village Hall

 Saturday, June 22nd ….

While the weather looked threatening with showers and blustery wind…we had to ditch our attempts to put up the marquees as they were literally blown away! Nevertheless we crowded into our wonderful Village Hall and enjoyed the brass band and refreshments…and thankfully the rain stopped and the sun came out! ..

.
During the morning we tried to put up tents in the field behind the Village Hall, but the wind was so fierce that we had to admit defeat and move the activities we had planned for them into the Village Hall. A big “Thank you” to Jeremy Spurr, Debbie Fenlon, Jess and Diana McNally for their valiant efforts, both in loaning the tents and trying to put them up.There was also a lovely Flower Festival in the Church which was very much admired and enjoyed , which made the Church look so beautiful for the Service of Thanksgiving the following day.

What a fantastic weekend of celebration for this special occasion and one we will all remember.

DSC03850 Barry Pritchard was our Master of Ceremonies at the party on Saturday 22 June, which began with a wonderful performance by the Salisbury Concert B Band under their conductor, Chris Holmes.…………………………………………………..

This was followed by an entertaining demonstration on a summer theme by Jeff the Chef.

His masterly skills produced some wonderful dishes using salmon, lamb and a selection of vegetables whilst amusing us with humorous comments and jokes which had us all laughing. A big Thank You to Jeff for taking part in our celebrations and preparing such delicious food.

Sunday 23rd June.

Sunday 23rd June …… saw the Service of Thanksgiving at St John’s Church for 100 Years of our Village Hall organised by the Parochial Church Council.

Rev Jane Dunlop officiated and Philip Lawson played the organ. During the Service we said prayers, including the Opening Prayer for the Village Hall and those involved with it, we sang the hymns Lord for the years, How great Thou art, All people that on earth do dwell, Onward Christian soldiers, and Thy hand O God has guided.

Janice Ford read from 2 Chronicles, chapter 2, verses 1-10 about the preparations for the building of the Temple. Barry Pritchard read a history of the Village Hall written by Sharon Finmore-Wooldridge, followed by Graham Paramor who read an account from the PCC Minute Book for 1913 about the building of the Village Hall.

Malcolm Read spoke about the Village Hall’s use from wartime to 1955 which included many of his own recollections. After the Lord’s Prayer, we shared The Peace and the Service ended with the Blessing and Dismissal. A big Thank you to the PCC for organising the Service, to Rev Jane for officiating, to Philip for playing the organ for us, to Janice, Barry, Graham and Malcolm for their readings and to everyone who attended.

It was a wonderful Service which everyone enjoyed.

It was an amazing weekend when our village came together to celebrate this remarkable achievement. Like many rural communities, over the years we have lost most of our amenities, but we still have our Village Hall and it is still used it as it was intended to be when it was built in 1913. Long may it continue to do so.
